Waves Drop Midweek Contest Against USC

LOS ANGELES – For the second-straight game, the Pepperdine baseball team took an early lead against a PAC12 opponent. On Tuesday, USC overcame the two-run lead to defeat the Waves 5-2.

The Waves (17-16) have the rest of the week off before hosting PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount next weekend.

BIG WAVES
  • Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) went 3-for-5 on the day and scored a run.
  • Sophomore outfielder Reese Alexiades (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) drove in one of two runs for the Waves on a sacrifice fly.
  • Freshman catcher Mitchell Dickson (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus HS) drove in the other run on a safety squeeze bunt.

GAME RECAP
The Waves jumped out to an early lead in the third after Young singled and Matthew Kanfer doubled to put runners on second and third. Alexiades then flied out to right field, deep enough for Young to score and give the Waves a 1-0 lead after three innings.

In the fourth, Justin Lutes singled and was moved from second to third on a Saul Sandoval-Estrada single. Dickson then laid down a bunt to the first base side to score Lutes from third and give the Waves a 2-0 lead after three and a half.

The Trojans responded in the fourth with a run of their own, a solo home run to cut the Waves lead to 2-1 after four complete innings.

In the fifth, the Trojans tied the game on a wild pitch, and then took the lead on a 2-RBI single. After five innings of play, the Trojans led the Waves 4-2. An RBI single in the sixth cemented the Trojans' 5-2 victory.

UP NEXT
The Waves have the next week and a half off before returning to Eddy D. Field to host PCH-Cup and West Coast Conference rival LMU. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday, April 26.
