Pendergast Throws Complete-Game Shutout Over LMU

MALIBU, Calif.Jonathan Pendergast of the Pepperdine baseball team was lights-out on Friday, as the Waves defeated West Coast Conference and PCH-Cup rival Loyola Marymount 2-0. Cory Wills homered for the Waves.

The Waves (18-16, 9-7 WCC) kept the Lions (24-17, 12-7 WCC) to only five hits and no runs on the day, and scored two runs on seven hits.

BIG WAVES
  • Senior RHP Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) was stellar over nine innings, allowing just five hits and no runs, striking out 10 batters. He improves his record to 5-2 on the year.
  • Senior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapi College) got the scoring started for the Waves, hitting a solo home run in the fourth inning.
  • Junior catcher Joe Caparis (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) drove in the Waves' second run of the day in the eighth inning.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
After three scoreless innings of play, Wills came up with one out in the fourth and launched a ball over the right field fence to give the Waves a 1-0 lead after four innings.

Pendergast was clinical on the mound the entire game, scattering just five hits, and getting through a couple of jams en route to a complete-game shutout. In the sixth, he struck out two straight batters with runners on second and third to keep any runs from scoring.

In the eighth, Wills singled, and reached second on a Justin Lutes single. Aharon Modlin was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Caparis singled through the right side, scoring Wills. Lutes was thrown out at home to end the inning, but the Waves led 2-0 after eight innings. Pendergast then came back out and shut the door with two more strikeouts, securing the Waves' victory.
