LA JOLLA, California – Two more school records fell on Saturday for the Pepperdine track teams courtesy of Caila Tongco and Brandon Davis at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational.
Â
Tongco (Kent, Wash./Kent-Meridian HS), a sophomore, lowered the record in the women's 100-meter hurdles for the third time this season. She ran 14.50 seconds, better than her time of 14.65 set last month, to finish 14th out of 55 runners. Tongco also had a PR in the 200 meters, with a time of 25.60 seconds that moved her from #5 to #4 on the Waves' all-time list in that event. Tongco was also Pepperdine's top finisher in the 100.
Â
Davis (Troy, Mich./Troy HS), a sophomore, posted a time of 1:00.94 in the men's 400-meter hurdles. The event hasn't been run often by the Waves over the years, but he bettered the previous top time of 1:04.74 recorded by Robby DeVillez in 2009. He was also the team's top finisher in the 400.
Â
"Caila lowered her record again, which was really great," Pepperdine Coach Robert Radnoti said. "Brandon ran a seldom-run race for us, but he lowered that record by four seconds, and that was neat for him to notch a school record. We had a lot of people set PRs today, and that was a good thing. Overall it was a great day of racing and the coaches have done an awesome job getting our runners ready."
Â
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, freshman Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) and sophomore Sheridan Davis (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge HS) ran PRs of 1:06.37 and 1:06.46, respectively. Those marks rank third and fourth in Pepperdine history.
Â
The Waves saw some good finishes in the distance events. Freshman Kyle McCabe (Westminster, Colo./Holy Family HS) was 13th out of 43 runners in the men's 5,000 meters. Freshman Jackson Felkins (Southlake, Texas/Carroll Senior HS) was 17th out of 82 runners in the men's 1,500 meters, followed by sophomore Kieran Halewyn (Lake Oswego, Ore./Southridge HS) in 18th place. Freshman Shelby White (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill HS) was 18th in the women's 3,000 meters.
Â
Other Waves who were the team's top finishers in various events included junior Izabela Garcia-Arce (Bonita, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) in the women's 800, junior Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) in the women's 1,500, freshman Connor Shahadi (Elkton, Md./Tri-State Christian Academy) in the men's 200 and junior Adam Fahey (Clearwater, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) in the men's 800.
Â
Track season concludes next week, with Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday (April 18) and Long Beach State's Beach Invitational on Friday and Saturday (April 19-20).
