PROVO, Utah –
Jonathan Pendergast of the Pepperdine baseball team was outstanding in Saturday's 7-0 victory over BYU. The senior pitched the second complete game shutout of his career, and first this season.
The Waves (17-14, 8-7 WCC) avoided the sweep from the Cougars (24-9, 10-5 WCC) in dominating fashion, outhitting the opposition 11-6 and not allowing a single run.
BIG WAVES
- Senior RHP Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) threw his first complete game of the year, giving up only six hits and striking out three, picking up his fourth win of the year.
- Senior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapai College) went 3-for-4 on the day and scored two runs.
- Junior infielder Justin Lutes (Henderson, Nev./College of Southern Nevada) went 2-for-4 on the day, and drove in two.
- Sophomore utility Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
GAME RECAP
Pepperdine opened the scoring in the second inning, when
Aharon Modlin doubled down the left field line, scoring Cook. Lutes then singled, scoring Wills from second. Modlin scored on a wild pitch to give the Waves a 3-0 lead after two.
In the fourth, Lutes continued his hot streak with an RBI double to right, scoring wills from second and giving the Waves a 4-0 lead going into the fifth inning.
Quincy McAfee hit an RBI single in the seventh inning, scoring
Wyatt Young from second to give the Waves a 5-0 lead after seven innings of play.
Pendergast was absolutely stellar, allowing only six hits across nine innings. He also walked just two batters, while striking out two in the complete-game shutout.
The Waves scored their final two runs in the eighth, when Cook singled into left, scoring
Brandt Belk and
Matthew Kanfer, securing the Waves' 7-0 victory.

The Waves have two midweek games this week, taking on #1 ranked UCLA on Monday and USC on Tuesday. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 6 p.m.
