IRVINE, California – Caila Tongco broke her own school record in the women's 100-meter hurdles and she,
Abbey Meck and
Jackson Felkins all continued to make inroads on the Pepperdine track teams' all-time bests with strong performances on Saturday at UC Irvine's Spring Collegiate Classic.
Tongco (Kent, Wash./Kent-Meridian HS), a sophomore, shattered her own hurdles record of 15.06 seconds set earlier this year with a time of 14.65 seconds, which was good for fourth place. Tongco also had PRs in the 100 (12.28) and 200 (25.71) today. She was already #3 and #5 on the Waves' all-time lists and that did not change. She came in third place in the 100.
Meck (Santa Cruz, Calif./San Lorenzo Valley HS), a sophomore, took second place in the women's 3,000 meters and her time of 10:09.18 entered her at #3 on the Waves' all-time list in the event. She also appears in Pepperdine's top five in the 1,500, mile and 5.000.
Felkins (Southlake, Texas/Carroll Senior HS), a freshman, took third place in the men's 3,000 meters. He moved into #3 on the Waves' all-time list in the event with a time of 8:35.76. Last week he added his name to the 5,000 list. Also in the 3,000, senior
Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS) took fourth place and junior
Jalen Frantal (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central HS) was fifth.
Pepperdine's top-finishing women in other races included sophomore
Eden Dorsey (San Antonio, Texas/Young Women's Leadership Academy) in the 400, freshman
Riley Wright (Chandler, Ariz./Corona Del Sol HS) in the 800, junior
Cori Persinger (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit West HS) in the 1,500 and senior
Catie Barilla (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos HS) in the 400 hurdles. For the men, it was also sophomore
Brandon Davis (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) in the 400, sophomore
Kieran Halewyn (Lake Oswego, Ore./Southridge HS) in the 800 and junior
Treet Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) in the 1,500.
"It was a wonderful day, a lot of sunshine and pretty warm, and we had a lot of good performances," Pepperdine Coach
Robert Radnoti said. "Caila just obliterated the school record. You normally see a record like this broken by hundredths of a second or a tenth of a second, but she was four-tenths of a second better. She ran four events today and was really outstanding. We're reaching the competitive part of our season and we're excited about Cal Poly next week. The team continues to perform well and we're pleased with the direction they are headed."
Pepperdine next competes at the Cal Poly Invitational next Saturday (March 23).
