SEATTLE, Washington – Pepperdine's
Talya Holenstein set a school record in the 800 meters at the Husky Invitational on Friday, though weather issues in the Northwest forced the event to become a one-day indoor track meet instead of two days.
"It started snowing as predicted and they moved Saturday's events to today, so we had a limited number of races," Pepperdine Coach
Robert Radnoti said. "Talya broke her school by about five seconds in the 800. She ran a really nice race. She's getting more and more comfortable moving up from the 400, so it was satisfying to be able to see her do that. A number of our other runners had PRs or season bests so that was good."
Holenstein (Portland, Ore./La Salle Catholic College Prep), a junior, broke the 800 record last weekend at Boise State with a time of 2:23.95, and she bettered her mark today with a time of 2:18.77.
Sophomore
Caila Tongco (Kent, Wash./Kent-Meridian HS) once again posted a pair of strong finishes, taking fifth place in the 60 meters in 7.82 seconds, and sixth place in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.03 seconds. Both were about a tenth of a second off the school record (she already owns the 60-meter hurdles mark).
The Waves only competed in a total of five races. Freshman
Alexa Ortega (Chatsworth, Calif./St. Genevieve HS) posted the team's top time in the 200 meters, as did freshman
Tiffany Egbo (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland HS) in the 400.
The sprinters went to Seattle, but Pepperdine's distance runners returned to Boise State this weekend and will take part in the Boise State Challenge on Saturday.
