Baseball Wins Second Straight Game

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Pepperdine baseball team won its second straight game on Saturday, defeating Cal 7-5 at GCU ballpark. Freshman infielder Wyatt Young had two RBI, including the game-winner in the eighth inning.
 
The Waves (2-0) and the Golden Bears (0-2) changed leads five times during the game, but the Waves held on to take the victory.
 
BIG WAVES
  • Freshman infielder Wyatt Young (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid Pacific Institute) went 3-for-5 on the night with two RBI, including the game-winner in the eighth inning.
  • Junior LHP Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) threw 5.0 innings, struck out seven and walked just two.
  • Junior infielder Duncan McKinnon (Huntington Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
  • Junior infielder Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 3-for-5 with one RBI and a double.
 
GAME RECAP
The Golden Bears got on the board first when Andrew Vaughn hit a home run after a walk to give Cal a 2-0 lead. The Waves responded in the bottom half of the first when Matthew Kanfer singled up the middle, bringing home Brandt Belk and Young to tie the game after one complete inning.
 
Cal retook the lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back singles with runners in scoring position, taking a 4-2 lead. The Waves again responded, as Reese Alexiades scored on a wild pitch. After four full innings, the Golden Bears led 4-3.
 
In the sixth inning, the Waves tied the game on a McKinnon single, which scored Mike Malinchak. They then took the lead on a Young single, scoring McKinnon to take a 5-4 lead after six. Cal evened the game up at five in the seventh inning, after a single scored an unearned run.
 
Pepperdine scored the winning runs in the eighth inning, taking a one-run lead on a Young single, which scored McKinnon. They then got an insurance run when McAfee singled to left, scoring Aharon Modlin, who came in as a defensive replacement.

The Waves have a double-header on Sunday, taking on Wichita State at 9 a.m. PT and Stanford at 1 p.m. PT.
