MALIBU, California – After an unexpected start at goalie resulted in a shutout victory at San Diego, Pepperdine junior Devyn Gilfoy has been named the West Coast Conference's Women's Soccer Player of the Week.
Gilfoy (Brentwood, Calif./Liberty HS) was originally slated to be in the starting lineup at her natural position of forward on Friday evening, but at the last minute was needed to step in at goalkeeper, a position she had yet to play in a college game. She ended up recording two saves and did well on numerous crosses, corner kicks and other miscellaneous balls in the box as the Waves posted a 1-0 victory in overtime over the Toreros.
It was the Waves' ninth shutout of the season, keeping their NCAA Tournament hopes going, and it handed the Toreros their first home loss in more than a year.
This was Pepperdine's second WCC Player of the Week award this season, as sophomore defender Isabel Nelson earned the honor on September 16.
This is the final week of the regular season and the Waves (9-6-2, 5-2-0) will play at San Francisco on Wednesday (November 6) at 6 p.m., before having Senior Day in the home finale on Saturday (November 9) against Saint Mary's at 1 p.m.
