Women's Soccer Goes on Road to Challenge BYU

MALIBU, California — The Pepperdine women's soccer team started West Coast Conference play with a home win, but now the Waves head out on the road for one of the biggest matches of the season at BYU.

In last week's United Soccer Coaches poll, the Cougars were #4, while the Waves were receiving votes. This will be the sixth time in 12 games that Pepperdine has faced a nationally ranked team.

MATCH #12 — Wednesday (October 9) at South Field in Provo, Utah: Pepperdine (5-4-2, 1-0-0) at BYU (10-0-1, 0-0-1) at 6 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. MT.

WATCH/ONLINE — The match will be streamed online by BYUtv. Links to the broadcast and live stats can be found at PepperdineWaves.com.

OPPONENT — Pepperdine is 6-4 all-time against BYU and has won three straight and four of the last five. The Waves won by 2-1 scores each of the last two years. In 2017 in Provo, Joelle Anderson scored both goals. Last year in Malibu, Isabel Nelson headed in the game-winner in the 78th minute. The Cougars were perfect through the first 10 games of this season before rallying for a 2-2 tie at Santa Clara on Saturday to start WCC play. Both Pepperdine and BYU have played Texas A&M (the Cougars won, the Waves tied). BYU has scored 31 goals and allowed just five (four came in the last two games).

LAST GAME — Trinity Watson scored on a penalty kick, Hailey Stenberg added a second-half goal and Kinsey Ehmann stopped one of the two penalty kicks she faced as Pepperdine opened WCC play with a 2-1 home win over Portland on Saturday. The Waves outshot the Pilots 14-10.

NOTABLE — After defeating Portland, the Waves are now unbeaten in their last 11 WCC openers (8-0-3) ... Hailey Stenberg now has a team-high three goals while three others — Shelby Little, Leyla McFarland and Brie Welch — have scored twice ... McFarland leads with four assists (tied for fifth in the WCC) and eight points ... Kinsey Ehmann is first in the WCC in shutouts per game (0.38), second in saves per game (4.1) and second in goals-against average (0.98) ... The Waves' defense has been excellent, ranking tied for second in the WCC in shutouts (five) and second in goals-against average (0.96). At the other end of the field, they're fifth in scoring at 1.36 goals per game ... Pepperdine played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country. The combined win-loss record of their non-conference opponents in 2018 was 120-62-20 (.643), and five of them won matches in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Five of the 10 opponents were nationally ranked at the time of the game, and another was receiving votes.

TICKETS — Single-game tickets at Tari Frahm Rokus Field cost $10 each for adults and $8 each for children under 12, seniors 65+ and alumni/Crest members. Students, faculty and staff are free with an ID. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $5 each.

NEXT — The Waves are on the road again this weekend when they visit PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount on Sunday (October 13).
