Waves Drop Series Opener to Dons

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team got a second-inning home run from junior outfielder Cory Wills, but ultimately fell 6-4 at Eddy D. Field Stadium to San Francisco in the series opener.

The Waves (22-18, 12-8 WCC) were outhit 10-6 by the Dons (25-21, 14-8 WCC) who take over the top of the West Coast Conference standings with the victory.

BIG WAVES

  • Junior outfielder Cory Wills (Henderson, Nev./Yavapai JC) went 2-for-4 on the day, including the second-inning home run that got the Waves on the scoreboard. His other hit was an RBI triple in the sixth inning, scoring Jordan Qsar from first. Wills had three RBI on the day.
  • Junior outfielder Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) also went 2-for-4 including a double in the eighth inning to set up a run scored.

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Waves fell behind early as San Francisco got on the board in the second inning, scoring four runs off of singles from Aaron Ping and Michael Perri. In the home half of the second, Wills came up and smacked the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for a solo shot. After two innings, the Waves trailed 4-1.

San Francisco lengthened their lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning, scoring a run before a rundown ended the inning.

In the sixth inning, Pepperdine got two more runs, this time on an RBI triple from Wills, and a sacrifice fly from Quincy McAfee, getting the Waves to within two runs.

After a walk and a hit batsman in the seventh, the Dons scored their sixth run of the afternoon on a single to go up 6-3.

The Waves scored their final run in the eighth inning on an RBI groundout from Wills, his third RBI of the day, moving the score to the final 6-4 tally.

The Waves and Dons play the second game of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
