Kanfer, Qsar Lead Waves Past San Diego, 14-1

MALIBU, Calif.
- The Pepperdine baseball team ended one streak and continued another as the Waves pounded out 16 hits and got another solid performance on the mound as they defeated San Diego 14-1 Friday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The victory for Pepperdine (19-17, 10-6 WCC) ended a five-game losing streak to the Toreros (18-20, 7-9) while improving the Waves' win streak to five straight wins - including winning eight of their last 10 WCC games.

Pepperdine scored in each of the first four innings to build an 11-0 lead and never looked back - scoring in six of their eight at-bats on the day.


BIG WAVES
  • Junior left fielder Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and three runs.
  • Junior right fielder Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, four RBI and three runs.
  • Freshman first baseman Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run.
  • Sophomore second baseman Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/ Westside HS) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
  • Junior shortstop Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) went 2-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI.
  • Freshman right-hander Cooper Chandler (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland HS) went six innings and gave up one run on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
PLAY-BY-PLAY

A San Diego fielding error to lead off the first got the Waves rolling as a Matthew Kanfer single and a Jordan Qsar two-run double quickly made it 2-0. Duncan McKinnon later singled up the middle to score a run and push the Pepperdine lead to 3-0.

Chase Lambert led off the second with a single and scored on a Kanfer RBI double to make it 4-0. Qsar then lined an RBI triple down the right field line and that was followed by a Cory Wills RBI single to center to increase Pepperdine's lead to 6-0.

The Waves kept rolling in the third as Brandt Belk hit an RBI double and Kanfer followed with a two-run double to make it 9-0 Pepperdine.

The Waves scored for the fourth inning in a row to start the game when Belk hit a two-out, two-run RBI single to make it 11-0.

San Diego got on the board in the sixth with a run, but the Waves answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning on a Lambert RBI double to right center to make it 12-1.

The Waves concluded their scoring in the seventh when Qsar hit an RBI double to right center and McAfee followed with an RBI double to left to make the final 14-1.

  • The Waves set season highs for runs (14), hits (16) and doubles (seven) on Friday.
  • The 14 runs is the most the Waves have scored against San Diego since scoring 15 against the Toreros in 2003.
  • The 13-run victory is the largest margin of victory for the Waves against San Diego since beating the Toreros 14-0 in 1996.
  • The four hits for Kanfer ties a career high (he's done it two other times).
