March 9, 2018 Final Stats | Baseball vs. CSUN Game 1
BOX SCORE
MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team scored four first-inning runs and added two more in the third, more than enough for Wave ace Wil Jensen as he struck out six during the Waves' 6-1 victory over CSUN Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
The Waves pounded out 11 hits with eight coming in the first three innings - capped by a Mike Malinchak two-run double in the third that gave Pepperdine a 6-0 lead.
- Sophomore Wil Jensen (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood HS) went 7.2 innings and gave up a run on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks - actually increasing his ERA to 0.62 on the season.
- Senior Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) singled in his first three plate appearances and finished 3-for-4 with a run.
- Freshman Mike Malinchak (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage HS) had the Waves' lone extra-base hit and led the team with three RBI.
- Junior Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
- Freshman Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 2-for-4 with a run.
The Waves came out swinging as the first five Pepperdine hitters reached in the first inning, including back-to-back singles from Qsar and Kanfer to make it 2-0. After a flyout to left, Billy Cook drew a bases-loaded walk and Malinchak drove in a run on a rare 7-2-5 fielder's choice (the left fielder trapped a line drive in left and a run scored, but the runner at second never advanced to third and was forced out) to give the Waves a 4-0 lead.
CSUN looked like it was going to answer in the second as it had runners on the corners with one out, but Jensen got the next Matador hitter to pop out while a caught stealing ended the frame with the Waves up 4-0.
After Jensen struck out two of the three hitters in the top of the third, the Waves got a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to singles from Kanfer and Cory Wills and a two-out, two-run double by Malinchak down the left field line to make it 6-0 Pepperdine.
It turned out to be more than enough as Jensen didn't allow a runner past second base until the eighth inning when the Matadors got one to make the final score 6-1.
- Jensen is now 3-0 on the season with a 0.62 ERA, 23 strikeouts and no walks in 29 innings of work.
- Jordan Qsar's RBI Friday was his team-best 13th
- Friday was the senior Lambert's fifth career three-hit game.
The Waves host CSUN 1 p.m. Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
