Modlin Hits Grand Slam in 10-7 Loss

MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team got a grand slam from Aharon Modlin, but fell to Arizona State 10-7 on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

The Waves (5-8) scored five runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 7-7, including Modlin's slam, but the Sun Devils (7-6) scored three runs in the final four innings to take the game.

  • Junior infielder Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 1-for-4 on the day, hitting the Waves' third home run of the year.
  • Freshman infielder Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 2-for-4 with a double and a single before coming out of the game.
  • Junior outfielder Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a double.

Arizona State got the scoring started right away with a leadoff triple and an RBI groundout that gave the visiting team a 1-0 lead after half of an inning. The Waves responded in the second with two runs of their own. After Quincy McAfee singled and Belk doubled, an RBI groundout from Matthew Kanfer scored McAfee, and a sacrifice fly from Qsar gave the Waves a 2-1 lead after one.

Arizona State came back in the third and scored five runs on five hits to take a 6-1 lead after three.

In the fourth, Mike Malinchak led off the inning with a walk, and was followed by Billy Cook, who also walked. A single from Cory Wills loaded the bases for Modlin. With two strikes, Modlin cranked a ball over the left field wall for a grand slam, the first home run of his career. McAfee got hit by a pitch after the home run, and eventually was singled in by Qsar. After four innings of play, the game was tied at 7-7.

The Sun Devils scored again in the fifth on a pair of RBI doubles, and again in the eighth on a solo shot by Spencer Torkelson to claim the victory, 10-7.

The Waves host CSUN in a two-game home series on Friday and Saturday before traveling to Northridge for the final game of the series. First pitch for the Friday game will be at 2 p.m.
