On Randy Wolf Day, Waves Take Series From BYU

March 31, 2018

BOX SCORE

MALIBU, Calif.
- A two-run, go-ahead homer by Duncan McKinnon and a strong day on the mound - highlighted by the Wave bullpen - propelled the Pepperdine baseball team to a 5-2 victory over BYU to take the series from the Cougars on Randy Wolf Day on Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

After Jonathan Pendergast went a solid 5.1 innings, Michael Mahony, Kiko Garcia, Easton Lucas and Jordan Qsar (third save) combined to throw a scoreless final 3.2 innings (giving up just one hit) to hold onto the victory and take the series from BYU after winning game one Thursday and dropping game two Friday.

BIG WAVES
  • Sophomore outfielder Duncan McKinnon (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS) went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs.
  • Freshman third baseman Billy Cook (Monument, Colo./Lewis Palmer HS) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
  • Freshman first baseman Brandt Belk (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) went 2-for-5 with a run and a double (his seventh on the year).
  • Junior pitcher Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) went 5.1 innings and gave up two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks to pick up his first victory on the season.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves got on the board first as Chase Lambert led off the game with a triple into right-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matthew Kanfer to make it 1-0. BYU tied the game in the second on a two-out RBI single by Brennon Anderson.

In the fourth inning Quincy McAfee beat out an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error to get things going for Pepperdine. That's when Duncan McKinnon turned on a 2-1 pitch and lined it over the wall in right field to make it 3-1 Waves.

Pepperdine added to the lead in the fifth when Brandt Belk hit a one-out double and scored on a Jordan Qsar RBI single to right to make it 4-1.

BYU got one back in the sixth before Billy Cook hit a ball off the wall in left in the eighth inning for an RBI double to make the final 5-2.

UP NEXT
The Waves take on CSUN 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium in Malibu.
