Waves Drop Series Finale to Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine baseball team and Gonzaga were scoreless through six innings, but the Zags scored five in the seventh and two in the eighth to defeat the Waves 7-0 in the rubber match of each teams' WCC-opening three-game series Sunday afternoon at Patterson Baseball Complex.

The Waves had their chances, but left six runners on as they went 1-for-10 with runners on base - including 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position (Gonzaga was 5-for-15 with runners on and 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position).

BIG WAVES

Junior pitcher Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral HS) surrendered just two hits through six innings and went 6.2 innings - giving up three earned runs on five hits with a career-high seven strikeouts and one walk.
Junior outfielder Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) went 2-for-4 with a double as the lone Pepperdine player to have multiple hit

PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Waves had a chance to strike first in the third inning when they loaded the bases - highlighted by singles from Billy Cook and Joe Caparis - but left them full as the game remained scoreless.

Pepperdine again threatened in the sixth inning as Brandt Belk opened the frame with a double and was sacrificed to third by Matthew Kanfer, but Belk was left stranded as the game stayed scoreless.

Gonzaga, which had just two hits through the first six innings against Pendergast, broke through in the seventh as a walk, single and a sacrifice bunt set up a two-run single by Nick Nyquist to make it 2-0. The Zags added three more in the inning to increase their lead to 5-0. Gonzaga added two more in the eighth to make the final score 7-0.
