MALIBU, Calif. " The top-ranked Pepperdine beach volleyball squad opened the Gamecock Grand Slam with a solid performance on Saturday, besting both No. 9 South Carolina 4-1 and unranked Jacksonville State with the second sweep of the season.
The Waves (13-2) will close out the tournament tomorrow against No. 7 LSU and No. 11 Georgia State at 6 and 8 a.m. (PT).

In the second flight, the top three Waves' pairs posted more solid action. Deahna Kraft and Corinne Quiggle clinched the overall win on court two with a 21-12, 21-11 victory over Hannah Kirk and Sadie Anderson. Pepperdine wouldn't stop, however, as both the No. 1 and No. 3 pairs won in two sets as well. Heidi Dyer and Gigi Hernandez posted a 21-9, 21-8 win over Shayla Schmidt and Hailey Hughes on three, while Brook Bauer and Madalyn Roh closed out the sweep with a 21-12, 21-5 win over Kaylie Milton and Katie Will on one.
In the second match of the day, the Waves opened the first flight by splitting the action. Caputo and Filippone downed Caroline Skaff and Jess Castine 21-9 and 21-17 to collect the first Waves' win of the afternoon. Shortly after, the Gamecocks picked up a two-set win on five to even the score heading into the second flight. On the exhibition court, Kaity Bailey and Katie Gavin defeated AJ Baumann and Avery Davis 21-19, 18-21, 15-8 as well.
In the second flight, Pepperdine dominated the courts, with the Waves' No. 1 pair Bauer and Roh downing Shannon Williams and Ali Denney 21-14, 21-11 to put the team in a position to clinch. Dyer and Hernandez were up to the task on court three as the pair put down Julia Mannisto and Carly Schnider with a 21-19, 21-17 score. Pepperdine closed out the day with a win on court two from Kraft and Quiggle as the duo bested Cadie Bates and Katie Smith 21-13, 16-21, 15-13. It was the pair's first three set match since February 28 as they've won the last 10-straight with the last nine being two-set victories.
