
#2 Pepperdine Bests #6 LSU, #10 GCU in Phoenix

PHOENIX, Ariz. " The No. 2 Pepperdine beach volleyball team dominated the Beach Volleyball Stadium courts on Saturday morning, closing out the Grand Canyon Tournament with a pair of 4-1 victories over No. 6 LSU and tournament-host No. 10 GCU.
The No. 3 and 4 pairs for the Waves, Heidi Dyer and Gigi Hernandez and Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone, went undefeated throughout the weekend to help Pepperdine towards a 2-1 record to start the 2018 campaign.

Pepperdine then gained the edge with a 21-17, 21-12 win from Kaity Bailey and Katie Gavin over Emily Hardesty and Gina Tillis on court five. The Waves' No. 2 pair would clinch the overall match as Brooke Bauer and Madalyn Roh put down Haleigh Nelson and Hunter Domanski with a 30-28, 21-15 final mark. Pepperdine completed the 4-1 win with a Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone three-set 16-21, 21-14, 15-13 victory over Megan Davenport and Emmy Allen in the No. 4 position.
Pepperdine then moved on to be challenged by tournament-host No. 10 GCU in the next match in a set of two three-match flights. In the first flight, Caputo and Filippone dominated Katie Sarber and Natalie Honzovicova with a 25-23, 21-9 score, while the Waves' No. 5 partnership fell 21-10, 21-14.
In the second flight, the Pepperdine gained the early edge as Dyer and Hernandez downed Bella Bauman and Taylor Jarzombek 22-20, 21-5 to put their team in clinching territory. The match on court one extended to a third set, while Bauer and Roh once again did the match-clinching duties on court two with a 21-14, 21-13 victory over Hannah Towne and Jessica Stansfield. Corinne Quiggle and Deahna Kraft closed up the day with a 21-19, 13-21, 15-8 win over Molly Turner and Katie Pyles on court one for the 4-1 win to close the GCU Tournament on a high note.
