MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine women's soccer team claimed three of the West Coast Conference's five major postseason awards today as
Hailey Harbison and
Brielle Preece repeated as the Defender and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively, while
Isabel Nelson was named Freshman of the Year. A total of six Waves were honored.
With Pepperdine boasting the WCC's best defense, it only made sense that goalkeeper Preece and defenders Harbison and Nelson would be honored. The Waves had a 0.82 goals-against average overall, and in WCC play, they posted five shutouts in nine games while only conceding four goals (for a 0.42 goals-against average).
Harbison and Preece made the All-WCC first team, Nelson and
Joelle Anderson were All-WCC second team and
Christina Settles was All-WCC honorable mention. Nelson and
Laura Ishikawa made the WCC All-Freshman team.
Harbison (Rancho Penasquitos, Calif./Westview HS), a redshirt senior, became the first Wave ever to earn the WCC Defensive Player of the Year award last season. Now she's the first WCC player ever to repeat as the award-winner. Harbison earned All-WCC honors all four of her seasons (twice on the first team, once on the second team and once on honorable mention). She was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy watch list at the start of the season. Harbison started all 19 games and had one goal and two assists.
Preece (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS), a redshirt senior, makes it three straight years that the Waves have brought home the Goalkeeper of the Year award. Hannah Seabert became the first Pepperdine player ever to earn it in 2016, followed by Preece two years in a row. Preece is just the second WCC goalkeeper to earn the award twice in a row. Preece also made the All-WCC first team for the second straight year. She led the WCC in goals-against average and shutouts both overall (0.84, nine) and in league play (0.42, five).
Nelson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) is the fifth Wave to earn the Freshman of the Year award and the first since Settles in 2015. Nelson won a starting job as a central defender early in the season and she started the final 16 games of the season. She scored two goals this season, including the game-winner vs. BYU.
Anderson (San Jose, Calif./Harker School), a sophomore forward, made the All-WCC second team for the second straight year. She led the team with five goals and 13 points while sharing the team high with three assists. All five of her goals were game-winners, which tied for second in the WCC.
Settles (Oceanside, Calif./Oceanside HS), a senior midfielder, earned All-WCC notice for the third time (twice honorable mention and once on the second team). She started 13 of the 16 games in which she played and had two assists.
Ishikawa (Westlake Village, Calif./Westlake HS), a redshirt freshman defender, played in 14 games and made 11 starts.
Pepperdine finished the 2018 season with an 11-6-2 record and in third place in the WCC with a 6-1-2 mark.
