Waves Hang on to Defeat San Jose State

SARATOGA, Calif. – Thanks to four-goal performances from Balazs Kosa and Chris Dilworth, the #7 Pepperdine men's water polo team came out on top against #20 San Jose State 13-11 in a Golden Coast Conference match on Saturday.
The Waves (14-10, 3-1 GCC) also had a hat trick from Curtis Jarvis in the defeat of the Spartans (6-15, 0-3 GCC).
GAME RECAP
The Waves got off to a shaky start in the first quarter, getting only two goals. One was from Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) to tie the game at one and the other was from Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS). The Spartans led the Waves 4-2 after the first period of play.
In the second quarter, the Waves' offense came alive, getting four straight goals to surge ahead to a 6-4 lead. Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Altalanos Iskola es Gimnazium) led the wat, scoring three of his four goals in the second quarter. Dilworth got two of his goals in the quarter, and another was tacked on by Jarvis giving the Wave a 7-6 lead at the half.
Mate Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) got the Waves going in the third, followed by Dilworth's third goal of the game. The Spartans scored three goals in the third, but Dilworth and Michael Dakis (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) scored to end third with the Waves leading 12-9.
San Jose State scored two goals in the fourth, but Kosa scored with 4:07 left in the game to put it out of reach. Stellar defense kept the Spartans from scoring any more, giving the Waves the victory.Â
