PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves came out strong in the first set, fueled by the energy of the senior day festivities, amassing an 11-4 lead early on after big aces from
Tarah Wylie and a block effort from
Alli O'Harra and
Blossom Sato. Late in the action, the Pilots brought the score within one, battling back seven-set point opportunities from the Waves. Pepperdine remained resilient, however, and won the set 25-23.
After the late jolt in the first set, Portland came out big in the second set, pulling ahead early and eventually winning the set 25-17.
It was a see-saw battle throughout much of the third set, with both teams reaching a 13-13. After big attacks from O'Harra,
Heidi Dyer and
Shannon Scully, the Waves started to pull away. Another big serving presence from Wylie, featuring a solo block from O'Harra and a collaboration from O'Harra with Dyer, helped Pepperdine to a six-point advantage at 20-14. Sato snuck one past the Pilots and Wylie closed up the set with a kill for a 25-17 win and a 2-1 match advantage heading into the fourth.
Sato put the Pilots off-kilter with a strong presence on the service line to open the fourth set and extra kills from
Hannah Frohling, Wylie and Dyer gave the Waves a 4-0 lead early. The Waves continued with a big smash front from Scully and O'Harra for a 10-3 lead. Shortly after, however, Portland started to close the gap and eventually tied the set at 12's. Each side went point-for-point, exchanging 11 tied scores and six lead changes in the final set en route to a tied 23-23 score. Wylie would do the honors for both of the final points of the match, putting a kill down for a set-point option and then shutting the match down with a solo rejection from the middle.
