MALIBU, California – Senior goalkeeper Brielle Preece of the Pepperdine women's soccer team was awarded West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for her efforts this past weekend, which included a crucial penalty-kick save in a 1-0 victory over fourth-ranked Santa Clara on Sunday.
Preece (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS) stopped a penalty kick when it was scoreless in the 40th minute. It turned out to be a huge game-changer, as instead of Santa Clara perhaps going into halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Waves scored less than four minutes later and took the lead at the break.
The win ended Santa Clara's eight-game unbeaten streak and gave the Waves their 10th straight home win over the Broncos.
Preece could have had two shutouts on the weekend if not for an 88th-minute goal by USF on Friday that resulted in a 1-1 tie. Preece had four saves in both games.
The Santa Clara shutout was the 20th solo shutout of her career, which ranks fourth all-time at Pepperdine. She lowered her season goals-against average to 1.04. It was her sixth solo shutout and the team's seventh of the season.
Preece was the WCC's Goalkeeper of the Year in 2017 and she also made the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region second team and the All-WCC first team last year. She was named to the Senior CLASS Award's 30-player candidate list last month.
This is her second career WCC Player of the Week award, and the first for any Wave this season.
