Box Score SPOKANE, Washington – Senior goalkeeper
Brielle Preece helped the #25 Pepperdine women's soccer team to its eighth shutout of the season, but the Waves couldn't unlock Gonzaga's defense and the result was a 0-0 tie in West Coast Conference play on Friday night.
The result likely ends the Waves' quest for a third straight WCC title. They're in third place at 14 points, four behind Santa Clara and BYU, but the Waves (9-6-2, 4-1-2) would need to win twice and have a lot of help. Still, Pepperdine's hopes of an NCAA Tournament berth are still alive with two positive results. Gonzaga moved to 8-4-4, 3-2-2.
It was an evenly played game as Gonzaga was credited with an 18-17 shots advantage, while both teams put five shots on goal. Both schools also hit the crossbar once apiece in the first half.
The Waves had a number of quality chances. Sophomore forward
Joelle Anderson (San Jose, Calif./Harker School) almost got an early goal, but Gonzaga goalkeeper Isabel Jones made an excellent stop in the fifth minute. Anderson also had a couple of near-misses in overtime. Junior forward
Hailey Stenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei HS) hit the crossbar in the 17th minute. Senior defender
Hailey Harbison (Rancho Penasquitos, Calif./Westview HS) forced a diving save early in the first overtime.
Preece (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS) made four saves to get the shutout. One came on a spectacular stop in the 87th minute on a close-range shot to send the game to overtime. The Waves' eight shutouts are tied for the most in the WCC.
