Reyes Scores Twice as Soccer Beats LMU 2-1

MALIBU, CaliforniaCalista Reyes found an outstanding time to score her first two goals of the season, as they came less than five minutes apart in the second half and propelled the Pepperdine women's soccer team to a 2-1 comeback victory over rival Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon in West Coast Conference play.

The Waves (9-6-1, 4-1-1 WCC) are unbeaten in their last four and stayed alive in the conference title race. They outshot the Lions (3-10-4, 1-4-1) by a total of 13-3 overall and picked up a PCH Cup rivalry point.

Reyes (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista HS), a sophomore forward, also scored the game-winner last year at LMU in a 1-0 victory. With the Lions holding a 1-0 edge today, she scored in the 69th and 74th minutes to give the Waves the victory.

GOALS

LMU 20': Jalyn Lupo sent in a long throw-in from the right side. It went over the heads of the first wave of players and took a high bounce in the box toward the far post, where Ali King headed it in for the first goal of the game.

Pepperdine 69': Senior defender Hailey Harbison (Rancho Penasquitos, Calif./Westview HS) kicked a long ball into the box. It was knocked back out of the box by an LMU defender, but Reyes ran onto it, took two dribbles and unleashed a perfectly placed shot with her left foot that beat the goalie to the right.

Pepperdine 74': Junior midfielder Courtney Merrill (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) played a short ball ahead to Reyes in the right side of the box. Reyes made a nice turn on the ball, then shot quickly with her left foot to the opposite post for what turned out to be the game-winner.

QUOTABLE

Pepperdine Coach Tim Ward said: "The first half, LMU was better than us. The goal was kind of funky, but they played harder and were winning individual battles all around. We made some adjustments at halftime. I'm really proud of our girls: down a goal, it's a big game, still a championship to play for and we needed to win this game. We showed our true character and in the second half we played brilliant. Two great goals from Calista Reyes. Two really well-taken goals, two massive goals for our team, and a great three points for us."

NOTABLE

  • Pepperdine won for the first time this season when trailing at halftime (0-4 previously) and for the first time when the opponent scored the opening goal (0-6 previously).
  • The Waves, now 6-2-1 at Tari Frahm Rokus Field in 2018, are assured of a winning home season for the 26th time in the program's 26-year history.
  • Reyes became the first Wave to score two goals in a game this season.
