Strong Start Propels Waves to Victory

MALIBU, Calif. – Mate Toth of the No. 6 Pepperdine men's water polo team got off to a stellar start, scoring three goals in the first quarter to help the Waves defeat No. 11 UC Irvine 13-12. Sam Paur and Michael Dakis also had three goals apiece.
The Waves (11-8, 2-0 GCC) jumped out to a quick lead in the first, but were outscored in the second half, 7-4, by the Anteaters (7-10, 0-2 GCC).
GAME RECAP
Toth (Balatonalmadi, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Boarding School) had the hot hand early, scoring three goals in the first quarter. Paur (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) and Ferrari (Redwood City, Calif/St. Francis HS) also scored in the first, giving the Waves a 5-0 lead after one period of play.
Chris Dilworth (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) scored to lead off the second quarter, giving the Waves a 6-0 lead. Irvine then scored three straight goals before Paur netted his second of the game. Mikey Dakis (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS) and Curtis Jarvis (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS) each scored to send the game to the half with the Waves leading 9-5.
Dakis got his final two goals in the third quarter, the only goals in the quarter for the Waves. UCI scored three times in the quarter, but trialed the Waves 11-8 leading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was highly contested, with the Anteaters scoring the first two goals of the quarter to get within one goal. Balazs Kosa (Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc Altalanos Iskola es Gimnazium) scored his only goal of the game to keep the Waves up two before the Anteaters pulled back within one. Paur finished off his hat trick to take the two-goal lead back. Irvine then scored with three minutes left on the clock to again come within one. Stalwart defense from the Waves kept the Anteaters from equalizing, sealing the victory.
