MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine women's soccer team collected its second straight West Coast Conference Player of the Week award after a big win, as freshman defender Isabel Nelson claimed the prize on Monday.
In the Waves' only game, Nelson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) scored the late game-winning goal in a 2-1 home victory against BYU on Saturday, while also providing a standout defensive performance. The win lifted the Waves into first place in the WCC and handed the Cougars their first conference loss.
The Waves scored an early goal, but BYU found the equalizer in the 77th minute. But less than a minute later, Nelson headed in a corner kick for what turned out to be her first career game-winning goal.
At the other end of the field, Nelson provided an excellent showing. In the 40th minute, she cleared a BYU shot off the line to preserve the 1-0 lead. The Cougars came into the game averaging WCC highs of 22 shots and 2.6 goals per game, but Nelson and the rest of the Waves helped keep BYU well under its averages.
This season, Nelson has appeared in 14 of 15 games, and has made 13 starts as a central defender. She has scored two goals, both on corner kicks.
Last week, senior goalkeeper Brielle Preece gave the Waves their first WCC Player of the Week award of the season.
Pepperdine (8-6-1, 3-1-1) next closes out its four-game homestand on Saturday (Oct. 20) against PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. The game will be shown on TheW.tv.
