SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Pepperdine women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Virginia Tech on Sunday, wrapping up a pair of season-opening neutral site games in San Diego.

Two freshmen connected to put the Waves up 1-0 in the first half as Devyn Gilfoy (Brentwood, Calif./Liberty HS) scored her first career goal on an assist from Brie Welch (Arroyo Grande, Calif./Arroyo Grande HS). The Hokies would come back midway through the second half to even the score. Neither team could find the back of the net the rest of the way. Pepperdine opens the year 0-1-1 after falling to Texas A&M on Friday.

Brielle Preece (Livermore, Calif./Granada HS) came up with three big saves in goal for the Waves, including stopping a penalty shot in the 17th minute. Preece also held Texas A&M scoreless through 90 minutes on Friday despite the eventual loss.

The Waves outshot Virginia Tech 7-2 in the two overtime periods.

"Better overall performance today from the Waves," said Head Coach Tim Ward. "I'm really proud of our girls' response after Friday's OT loss against what we feel is an NCAA tournament type team. Our ability to keep the ball and find some kind of rhythm was much improved. Also, it's great to see Welch and Devyn, two freshmen, connect for a really good goal. Overall, we're really proud of all the performances and the leadership from our returners."
