"Tough result in the first game of the year, but it might have been a fair result," said Pepperdine Head Coach Tim Ward. "I thought they started really strong, but by the middle of the first half, I thought we were in control of the game and had some really great chances to score. We had maybe two or three golden opportunities and at this level, if you don't capitalize it comes back to haunt you. In the second half they were the better team and as much as it pains me to say, they used their experience to squeeze the game. We'll need to do a better job managing the ball when we're fatigued, as late in the game, some of their best chances came from our giveaways. In the end, their goal was well taken and it will be a game we can and will have to grow from."
"Special praise for Brielle Preece, who made two or three fantastic saves and catches to keep us in the game," said Ward. "I'm super proud of her and her fight, as she played like a true Wave tonight."
