MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine pitching staff allowed one run in the first inning and then none the rest of the way as the Waves came away with a 6-1 victory at home over Cal Poly on Tuesday afternoon.
Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) hit a two-run homer in the bottom half of the first and that was all the offense Pepperdine would need despite putting up four more runs the rest of the way. The Waves split the season series with Cal Poly for the third straight year and move to 19-27 on the season. The Mustangs fall to 21-26 with the loss.
Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) got the start on the mound for Pepperdine and held the visitors to just the one run on two hits in his 4.0 innings of work. Garcia struck out three batters and walked one on the day. Austin Gehle (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Wakeland HS/Grayson College) picked up the win for the Waves, tossing 3.2 shutout innings of relief, giving up just two hits along the way.
Benjamin Slattery (Geneva, Ill./Geneva HS) entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the eighth inning, but got a huge strikeout to preserve a 5-1 Pepperdine lead. The Waves would add a run on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the eighth and Christian Stoutland (Calabasas, Calif./Oaks Christian HS) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close out the victory.
Qsar's homer put the Waves ahead for good in the first and Pepperdine would add single runs in the third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings. Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) was 2-for-5 on the day, scoring two runs and driving in one. Barnett hit a two-out single to prolong the first inning before Qsar came up and went deep for the second time this year.
Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) was also 2-for-3 in the game and drove in a run. Pepperdine had nine hits on the day.
Starter Cam Schneider took the loss for the Mustangs after throwing the first 2.1 innings and giving up two runs. Cal Poly used five pitchers in the game. Bradlee Beesley and Elijah Skipps each had two-hit days for the visitors.
Pepperdine is back in action this weekend when they host their final three home games against Saint Mary's starting on Friday.
