SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Matt Crowder doubled in Jeremy Goldenetz in the top of the 12th inning to propel the Pepperdine baseball team to a 6-5 win in San Francisco on Saturday afternoon.
Pepperdine also got heroics from Ben Rodriguez in the top of the ninth as he sent the game to extra innings with a home run. The Waves move to 18-26 overall and 7-13 in West Coast Conference play, while San Francisco falls to 23-25, 8-15 WCC.
In the top of the ninth inning, with two outs and trailing a run, Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) hit a pinch-hit solo home run to tie the game at five and send it to extra innings. Then in the 12th inning, Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS) led the inning off with a walk and Crowder (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School/BYU) hit a double down the right field line, scoring Goldenetz for the game-winning run.
Pepperdine score three runs in the top half of the sixth inning, first on a Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) single, scoring Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS), then on a two-out, two-run home run by senior Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS). The Dons answered back with three of their own on a three-run home run by Michael Perri.
San Francisco scored in the second inning on a fielder's choice. The Waves answered in the fourth with a run of their own on an RBI groundout from Qsar.
Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Catherdral Catholic HS) started on the mound for the Waves, going 6.2 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits, and striking out five Dons. Austin Gehle (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Wakeland HS/Grayson College) came on in relief, throwing 1.1 innings, only allowing a single hit before Qsar came in and threw the final 4.0 innings, giving up three hits while striking out one batter, not allowing a single run to pick up his second win of the year. For the Dons, Grant Goodman started on the mound, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing two runs, and striking out five Waves in the no-decision. Brandon Jenkins picked up the loss, allowing the two final runs in 4.0 innings.
The win ended an eleven-game losing skid for Pepperdine.
