May 4, 2017 MALIBU, California " The Pepperdine men's golf team will get to stay in California and play a familiar course at Stanford for its upcoming NCAA Regional appearance, as postseason bids were handed out today. This is the Waves' 22nd time making a regional since 1992.
Pepperdine is the #5 seed at the 13-team regional, which is being held at the Stanford Golf Course from May 15-17.
The Waves will need to finish in the top five to advance to the NCAA Championships (May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.).
Pepperdine finished in sixth place out of 24 teams at Stanford's Goodwin just a little over a month ago. The Waves have played at Stanford each of the last three years and in six of the last eight. As a team, Pepperdine previously competed at NCAA Regionals at Stanford in 1996 and 2005. As an individual, Josh Anderson was the medalist at a Stanford regional in 2012.
In order of seeding, the teams heading to this regional are Stanford, Baylor, Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Pepperdine, North Carolina, North Florida, BYU, Houston, Ohio State, UC Santa Barbara, Sacramento State and South Dakota State.
The 1997 NCAA champions, Pepperdine is attempting to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2011 and the ninth time overall. The Waves boast three top-10 finishes in their history.
The Waves, ranked 27th by Golfstat, won their own Southwestern Invitational this spring and are coming off a second-place showing at the West Coast Conference Championships. Michael Beard collected his second straight WCC Coach of the Year Award, while Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) was the WCC co-Player of the Year. Theegala, who was named a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus Award earlier this week, was joined on the All-WCC first team by sophomore Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and freshmen Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS).
A total of 81 teams and 45 individuals have been selected for regionals. The other five sites are College Grove, Tenn. (The Grove); West Lafayette, Ind. (Kampen Course); Austin, Texas (University of Texas Golf Club); Baton Rouge, La. (University Club); and Sammamish, Wash. (Aldarra Golf Club).
