ATHENS, Ga.: The 12th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis team had a bittersweet NCAA quarterfinal match against 4th-ranked Vanderbilt, falling 4-2 in the 'Elite Eight' round at Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Sunday afternoon.
It is the sixth-time in program history that the Waves (24-5) have advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals with the most recent season prior to this year occurring in 2016.
Pepperdine won the doubles point early with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 position over Vanderbilt (24-5). The Waves' eighth-ranked senior Christine Maddox and junior Mayar Sherif dominated No. 1-ranked Astra Sharma and Emily Smith 6-2 to open the action.
After the Commodores evened up the option with a win on court two, Pepperdine's No. 3-duo sophomore Dzina Milovanovic and freshman Ashley Lahey clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Christina Rosca and Fernanda Contreras to pull ahead 1-0 heading into singles.
In singles, the opposition tied the match with a two-set win on court six, but No. 37-ranked Sherif quickly helped the Waves to a 2-1 lead with a pair of 6-2 set wins over No. 1-2-ranked Rosca.
Vanderbilt was able to collect wins on courts five and two to finish off the overall match and advance to the NCAA Final Four.
Next, Pepperdine will send three singles and one doubles pair to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships to begin directly after the finish of the team championships on May 25 and continue through May 29. Follow @WavesTennis on Facebook and Twitter for immediate updates, results and more.
