SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team fell 8-2 to the San Diego Toreros on Sunday afternoon to close out the 2017 season.
Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 3-for-4 in the finale, but the rest of the Waves struggled to find their offense as San Diego scored the last six runs in their final four offensive frames.
The Toreros went up 2-0 early, but Modlin brought the Waves back with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the fourth to even the game at 2-2.
San Diego came back with a three-run fifth inning on a run-scoring single and two-run homer to go up for good. The Toreros added runs in the seventh and eighth.
Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) added the only other hit for the Waves on the day. Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) walked twice and scored a run, Josh Davis (Tulsa, Okla./Union HS) walked once and scored as well.
Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Catherdral Catholic HS) got the start and gave up four earned runs in 6.0 innings pitched. Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) threw the final two innings, giving up three runs and three hits. Louis Crow got the win in relief for San Diego.
Pepperdine closes the season 20-32 overall and 8-19 in West Coast Conference play. San Diego finishes 35-18-1 overall and 18-9 WCC. Both teams will miss the WCC tournament this season.
