SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team fell to San Diego on Saturday night, 9-3, in the second game of a three-game series.
Freshman Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) went 2-for-4 on the night for the Waves, leading the visitors offensively.
The Waves started out hot in the first inning, scoring a run off USD starter, Nick Sprengel. Ben Rodriguez's (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) RBI single was the only scoring from either team until the fourth inning.
In the fourth, the Toreros hit two of their three home runs on the night, on a solo shot from Roman Garcia, and a three-run home run from Jeff Houghtby. The Waves answered back in the fifth, with Rodriguez picking up his 32nd RBI on the year.
The Toreros then scored their final five runs in the fifth inning, on two RBI singles, and their final home run to extend their lead to six, which they would not give up.
Wil Jensen (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood HS) started for the Waves, picking up the loss. Torero relief pitcher Jonathan Teaney picked up the win, improving to 5-2 on the year. Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) came in for Jensen in the fifth inning.
The Toreros improve 34-18-1 to while the Waves fall to 21-21 on the year. The final game of the series will also be the final game for the Waves this season. That game will be Sunday at 1 pm, back in San Diego.
