SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team fell 3-1 to the San Diego Toreros to open up a three-game road series on Friday night.
The Waves struck first, but San Diego scored two late runs to take the lead for good. The two teams continue their series tomorrow at 6 p.m.
Pepperdine got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, loading up the bases with two outs. Jeremy Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS) drew a walk to score the only run of the game as the Toreros got a popup to end the threat and limit the damage.
After Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth and stranded a runner in the fifth, San Diego finally got to the Pepperdine starter in the sixth inning. Colton Waltner doubled down the line to even the game at 1-1. The Toreros would score twice in the seventh on an RBI double and single to take the lead.
Wilson tossed 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, while striking out four and walking three. Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) took over in the seventh inning and pitched 2.0 innings of relief for the Waves.
Paul Richan tossed 7.0 innings for the Toreros, giving up just one unearned run. Troy Conyers got the save after throwing the final 2.0 innings.
Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) and Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) each had two-hit days for Pepperdine. Aidan Stinett and Paul Kunst each had two hits apiece for San Diego.
