SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.: The Pepperdine men's tennis team had a tough battle with West Coast Conference opponents San Francisco at the California Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon, eventually falling 4-2.
The Waves (8-8, 3-1 WCC) dropped doubles matches on courts one and three to the Dons (9-12, 4-3 WCC), before falling in singles at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions to finish the match with the team's first WCC loss of the season.
In doubles action, the Waves on court two, senior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and sophomore Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) busted out of the starting gate en route to a 6-1 victory over Jerod Mah and Johan Joenhagen to start the day.
Pepperdine fell 6-4 on court one and had a tough battle on court three still left in action. After tying the set 6-6 on court three, junior duo Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) faced off with Paul Giraud and Oliver Poysti in the tiebreaker, eventually falling 7-6 (3).
San Francisco had the momentum early in singles with a 1-0 advantage to begin, but the Waves were in for the fight.
Sophomore Jack Van Slyke (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Laurel Springs HS (Calif.)) won the first singles match of the day after dominating Giraud with a 6-0, 6-2 result in the No. 5-position. The opposition then took two-set wins on courts two and three to pull ahead 3-1 with three courts still in action.
Hadlich would close the gap to 3-2 on court one with a well-played 7-5, 6-4 win for the Waves. Unfortunately, the Don on court four was close to the clinch and amassed a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win to clinch the match for the opposition at the 4-2 mark.
Next, the Waves will continue the northern road trip with Santa Clara at 1 p.m. tomorrow, April 9. Follow @PeppTennis on Facebook and Twitter for immediate updates and go to PepperdineWaves.com for full recaps, results and more.
