
No. 11 Waves Win Fifth-Straight WCC Championship Crown

CLAREMONT, Calif.: The 11th-ranked Pepperdine women's tennis squad collected its fifth-consecutive West Coast Conference Championship title on Saturday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The top-seeded Waves won doubles and the clinched the victory with singles wins on courts three, four and six to down 2nd-seeded Gonzaga with a 4-0 sweep.
The Waves have won 27 of the last 30-tournament titles and now hold a 61-3 all-time record in WCC tournament play since the dual-format was established in 1995. This season, Pepperdine has posted an untarnished 11-0 record against WCC competition, all of which have been won with uncontested sweeps.
The win is the Waves 16th-consecutive, while the team has also swept 12 of the last 14 opponents in that time as well. Pepperdine heads into the selection show on May 2 at 2:30 p.m. with a 21-4 overall record.
The championship bout began with doubles and the Waves No. 1-pair, 7th-ranked Mayar Sherif and Christine Maddox, opened action with a 6-1 dominating win over Nevada Apollo and Domonique Garley. Pepperdine's No. 3-pair, Ashley Lahey and Dzina Milovanovic then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Alex Bourgiugnon and Kate Ketels to pull ahead 1-0 heading into singles play.
Singles competition held similar fashion, with the Waves collecting first-set wins on five-of-six courts, with the exception being a 6-7 (9) battle for a lost first-set on court one.
Milovanovic would be the first to finish in the No. 6 position, collecting a 6-0, 6-3 win over Garley to extend the Waves' advantage.
At the No. 4 position, 86th-ranked Laura Gulbe then put the Waves in a position to clinch with a pair of 6-1 sets over Bourgiugnon for the 3-0 Waves' lead.
The Waves would clinch on court three as 36th-ranked Sherif bested her opponent Graciela Rosas with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. It was Sherif's second clinch of the tournament for the team.
Pepperdine tabbed three to WCC All-Tournament Team in singles and one doubles recognition. Sherif earned both singles and doubles recognition alongside doubles partner Maddox. Gulbe and Milovanovic also earned singles acclaim.
