MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team suffered a defeat in the ninth inning on Sunday to close out its series against Loyola Marymount with a 4-2 loss.
The Lions scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie and pick up the final victory of the series. Pepperdine falls to 17-21 overall and 6-9 in West Coast Conference play, while LMU moves to 27-13 overall, 14-4 WCC.
The Waves went up 2-0 in the fourth inning, getting two-out RBI singles from Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) and Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS). All six runs in the game were scored with two outs.
LMU came back with runs in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game up. In the ninth, the Lions loaded the bases and got a two-out single from Phil Caulfield to plate the game-winning runs.
Wil Jensen (Murray, Utah/Cottonwood HS) took the loss despite throwing a strong 8.1 innings. The go-ahead runs were charged to Jensen, but scored after he exited the game. LMU reliever Harrison Simon picked up the win and Codie Paiva got the save for the Lions.
Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) matched a career high at the plate, going 4-for-4 on the day to record the sixth four-hit game of his career. McAfee and Modlin each had two-hit games.
Four LMU players posted multi-hit games for the visitors. The Lions posted 11 hits to the Waves' 10.
Pepperdine will be back in action this weekend when they host Santa Clara for another WCC series starting on Friday at 3 p.m. Saturday's game will also be played at 3 p.m. due to the Seaver College graduation on campus that morning, and then Sunday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
