SANTA MONICA, Calif. - The 3rd-ranked and top-seeded Pepperdine beach volleyball team garnered it's 12th-sweep of the season to open the West Coast Conference Championships at Ocean Park Beach on Friday afternoon, dropping 4th-seeded Pacific 5-0 to advance to the next round of action.
Next, the Waves will play PCH Cup rivals Loyola Marymount on Saturday, April 22 at 9 a.m. in Santa Monica, with the winner advancing to the WCC-title match. Pepperdine, the returning WCC Champions, now holds a 22-3 overall record and has gone undefeated when playing WCC opponents, including a 5-0 sweep over LMU earlier this season in Long Beach, Calif.
To open the day, the Waves won first sets on all five courts. Only one match would stretch to three sets on the top court.
Senior Sarah Seiber (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS/Arizona) and sophomore Nikki Lyons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) would strike first, demanding a 21-5, 21-11 victory in the No. 5 position over Ashlyn Fleming and Skylar Wine to put the Waves up. The duo has posted a 2-0 record since they started playing together.
Sophomore duo Skylar Caputo (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) and Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) were the next to strike with an impressive 21-5, 21-5 win over Taylor Poncetta and Janie Feldshe on court three to put their team in clinching territory.
Sophomore Anika Wilson (Santa Barbara, Calif./San Marcos HS) and freshman Deahna Kraft (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) clinched the overall dual win with a 21-8, 21-10 victory over Alex Holt and Emily Baptista on court four, leaving only the two top courts still in action.
Pepperdine's No. 3 and No. 4 duo's have each posted 20-5 overall records this season thus far.
The Waves No. 2-pair graduate student Brittany Howard (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View HS/Stanford) and junior Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) finished next, defeating Katrin Gotterba and Maycie LaBass with a 21-9, 21-13 final mark to put the Waves up 4-0 on the day. The duo has a team-high win-loss output with a 22-3 overall record for a .880 success rate this season.
On court one, senior Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) and sophomore Madalyn Roh (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral HS) would finish off the sweep. After splitting the first two sets 21-14, 19-21, the Waves battled out the third set with Lexi Elman and Andie Shelton en route to a 15-12 win to finish out the day in Pepperdine's favor.
