PROVO, Utah - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped its finale at BYU on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-4 to the Cougars.
Pepperdine falls to 17-17 overall and 6-6 in West Coast Conference play, while BYU moves to 20-13, 9-3 WCC. The Waves won the opener in Provo, but dropped the last two games.
Pepperdine went up 4-0 early, getting a three-run homer from Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) in the second inning and then an RBI double from Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) in the third.
BYU would answer in the bottom half of the third, scoring four unearned runs to tie the game. A four-run fourth inning put the Cougars up for good. BYU would get two homers from Kyle Dean and multiple RBI from four different players.
Pepperdine loaded the bases with no outs in the top half of the eighth, but couldn't come away with a run. The Waves also left a runner on in the ninth, stranding six total for the game. BYU had 13 hits and left six on as well. Pepperdine had nine hits on the day.
Jeremy Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS) and Caruso each had two-hit games for the Waves. Max Green (Rolling Hills Estate, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) tossed 3.0 innings of relief, giving up one run and two hits.
The Waves return home for their next seven games, facing UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday in Malibu.
