PROVO, Utah - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped its second game at BYU, 7-2 on Friday night, evening the series at one win a piece.
The Cougars jumped on the Waves early for six runs in the first two innings and the visitors never found the rally they needed. The loss drops Pepperdine to 17-16 overall and 6-5 in West Coast Conference play, while BYU moves to 19-13, 8-3 WCC.
Colton Shaver hit a grand slam for the Cougars in the first inning and then two RBI singles in the bottom of the second made it a 6-0 game.
Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) got the early RBI for the Waves, hitting a run-scoring double in the third inning. Pepperdine would add a run on an error in the 9th, but that was it for the day.
Brady Corless tossed 8.0 innings for the home team, striking out nine batters and walking none to pick up the win.
Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Pepperdine. Tanner Chauncey and Keaton Kringlen each had two-hit days for BYU.
