PROVO, Utah - The hot bats of the Pepperdine baseball team powered the Waves to another win on Thursday night, as Pepperdine beat BYU 11-7 on 18 hits. The Waves have won five of their last six games.

The win moves the Waves to 17-15 overall and 6-4 in West Coast Conference play, while BYU falls to 18-13, 7-3 WCC. Pepperdine has now scored 54 runs in their last five games, matching a season high with the 18 hits on Thursday.

Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) had three hits and drove in four runs, and Matt Crowder (Atherton, Calif./Menlo School/BYU) and Aharon Modlin (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS) each had three-hit days with an RBI as well.

The Waves offense got going early when Quincy McAfee (Houston, Texas/Westside HS) and Jeremy Goldenetz (Corona, Calif./Corona Santiago HS) each reached to start the game and Barnett hit an RBI groundout to put Pepperdine up one. BYU evened the game back up with an RBI single from Brennon Anderson in the bottom of the second.

Pepperdine broke things open with a four-run fourth inning, getting an RBI double from Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) and an RBI single from Modlin to take a 3-1 lead. Barnett would double home two more runs with two outs in the inning to give the Waves a four-run lead.

Another four-run frame came in the sixth for the Waves, as Pepperdine scored all four runs with two outs in the top half of the inning. Goldenetz tripled home a run, Caruso doubled one home, and Barnett hit an RBI single to go along with a run scored on an error for the visitors.

BYU would answer with a run in the bottom half of each of the four-run innings and then scored two in the seventh on a Bronson Larsen home run. Pepperdine came back in the next frame, scoring two runs with two outs in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch and Crowder single. Larsen homered again in the ninth with a solo-shot to lead off the inning, but that was it for the Cougars, who saw their six-game WCC winning streak come to an end.

Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) got the save, tossing 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits, while striking out five batters. Michael Mahony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison HS) tossed the final 2.2 innings to pick up the save

Nine different Waves had hits in the game, with Caruso going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles. Goldenetz and Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) each had two-hit days as well.

BYU posted 13 hits in the game and each team left 10 runners on. The Waves and Cougars play game two of their series tomorrow at 5 p.m. (PT). That game can be seen live on TheW.tv.
