FRESNO, Calif. - The Pepperdine Baseball team picked up an 8-7 win over Fresno State in the conclusion of the team's postponed contest from earlier this year, but fell in the regularly scheduled game that followed, 5-2.
Pepperdine moves to 10-9 with the split, while the Bulldogs move to 12-8.
Pepperdine started the day by picking up a win in their suspended game against the Bulldogs, finishing off an 8-7 win in the 12th inning. The teams were tied 6-6 heading into the 12th when the game was stopped due to darkness in Malibu on March 7.
Fresno State picked up where the teams left off in the back and forth contest, scoring a run in the top of the 12th to take a 7-6 lead. The Waves wasted no time coming right back with an answer, getting singles from Aaron Barnett and Jordan Qsar to start the bottom of half of the inning. After an error followed by a passed ball scored the tying run, Ben Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to right field to end the game.
In the second game of the day, Chase Lambert gave the Waves a 1-0 lead with a solo-homer in the third inning and Josh Davis made 2-0 with an RBI single in the fourth. Fresno State would respond with two runs in the fifth and then took the lead on a passed ball in the sixth. The Bulldogs added two more runs with a two-out single in the eighth inning.
That was it for the Pepperdine offense on the day, as the Waves couldn't get anything going to come back late in the second game
Pepperdine used six pitchers and gave up five hits in the game, while Fresno State used six pitchers as well, giving up just three hits.
The Waves open up West Coast Conference play this weekend, starting a three game series at Pacific on Friday. All three games can be seen on TheW.tv.
