MALIBU, Calif. - Nick Costello came up with a walk-off single in the 12th inning to give the Pepperdine baseball team a 1-0 win over Grand Canyon at home on Friday afternoon.
Neither team could break through offensively for the first 11 and a half innings, but Costello came up with the Waves' fifth hit of the day to score Saul Sandoval-Estrada for the winning run. The victory moves Pepperdine to 8-7 on the year, while the Lopes fall to 5-10.
Ryan Wilson tossed the first nine innings of the game, giving up no runs on seven hits and no walks, while striking out five batters. Pepperdine pitching stranded nine Grand Canyon runners in the game as the Lopes came up with 10 hits on the day. The Waves did not walk a single batter in 12 innings of play.
"When you go nine innings, and don't give up any runs, I think that qualifies as a pretty good outing," said Pepperdine Head Coach Rick Hirtensteiner. "Ryan definitely gave us a chance to win, and unfortunately, the bats weren't producing many runs. Our staff kept us in there long enough to get the job done, thankfully. You can't ask for more than that."
Jordan Qsar took the mound and got the Waves through the 10th inning, getting a double play to erase a lone single. Kiko Garcia tossed the final two innings for Pepperdine, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the 11th with a popup and groundout. He would work a quick 1-2-3 12th to bring the Waves back up.
With two outs in the bottom of the 12th, Sandoval-Estrada worked a walk and then stole second to get into scoring position. Costello, behind in the count 1-2, then singled up the middle to bring home Sandoval-Estrada and set off a celebration behind second base.
"Saul has a knack for being in the right place at the right time and making things happen late in the game," said Hirtensteiner. "I'm not at all surprised that he got on, stole a base and scored the winning run. Then Costello really came through for us. He fought off a couple pitches and got the big hit."
Costello had the lone multi-hit day for the Waves, going 2-for-5 at the plate. Austin Bull and Greg Saenz each had two-hit days for Grand Canyon.
Jake Wong got the start for Grand Canyon and went 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on two hits and two walks. AJ Franks tossed the next 3.0 innings for the visitors, giving up one hit and no runs. Bobby Milacki came in for the final 1.2 innings, taking the loss after giving up two hits and the lone run of the day.
Garcia got the win for the Waves, moving to 2-0 on the year.
The Waves are back in action tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. when they take on Long Beach State in a non-conference matchup. Grand Canyon and Long Beach State will then face each other at 3 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves and Lopes finish up the weekend against one another on Sunday at 1 p.m.
