MALIBU, California -- Lamond Murray Jr. scored 30 points to lead the Pepperdine men's basketball team to its best performance of the season and its fourth consecutive home victory over BYU, a 99-83 victory in West Coast Conference play on Thursday night.
Five Waves scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game and Pepperdine (8-17, 4-9) shot a season-best 57.8% against the Cougars (17-9, 8-5), who haven't won in Firestone Fieldhouse since 2013.
The Waves just missed what would have been their first 100-point game since 2008 but still ended up with their most points of the Marty Wilson coaching era.
"I thought we competed tonight," Wilson said. "We had guys who stepped up when we needed to. We challenged them, and they answered the challenge. We took five charges tonight. We call those kinds of plays winning plays, and we made them tonight when they got on a run or got some momentum. We played unselfishly and made the right passes at the right time."
Murray and fellow senior starters Jeremy Major (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) and Jonathan Allen (Nashville, Tenn./Ravenwood HS) picked up their fourth win in four career home games against the Cougars.
Murray (Los Angeles, Calif./Bishop Montgomery HS) went 10-for-20 from the field while making all 10 of his free throws. It was his third time this season reaching the 30-point mark and the fourth of his career, and it was the ninth time in the last 10 games he's scored at least 20 points.
Major had 14 points and seven assists, and in making four three-pointers he moved up to fifth place on the Waves' all-time list with 152. Allen only had three points, but it came on a dagger three-pointer with 3:29 left that pushed Pepperdine's lead up to 14.
Another senior starter, graduate transfer Chris Reyes (La Verne, Calif./Damien HS/Utah), picked up his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds, plus four assists.
A pair of freshmen both set new career highs in scoring. Freshman guard Elijah Lee (Houston, Texas/HCYA Warriors) scored 15 of his 16 points in the first half and also had six assists and three steals. He made all three of his three-point attempts. Freshman forward Nolan Taylor (Keller, Texas/Keller HS) had 15 points and five rebounds.
BYU led for the first couple of minutes, but the Waves led for the final 35 minutes and 39 seconds. An 11-0 run put the Waves ahead 20-11 with 13 minutes left in the first half. Back-to-back three-pointers by Major and Lee later gave Pepperdine its first double-digit lead at 38-27 with 7:40 to go. Pepperdine went into the break with a 52-43 lead after making 59.4% of their first-half shots. The 52 points were the most by the Waves in any half this season.
The second half was a lot of the same, although the Cougars got as close as four points early in the half. A basket by sophomore center Nate Gehring (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee HS) made it a double-digit lead again at 63-53 with 16:03 to go, and the Cougars would only get the game back into single-digits one more time.
The Waves hit a bit of a cold spell as the Cougars got the deficit down to nine at 83-74 with 7:44 left, but neither team scored for nearly three minutes. Murray finally broke through a three-point play with 4:56 left, and the Waves weren't threatened again. The Waves shot 56.3% in the second half.
BYU shot 47.5% and got 19 points from Nick Emery and 18 from Eric Mika. The Waves had a 34-29 rebounding edge. Turnovers were plentiful and close to even, with 18 committed by the Cougars and 17 by the Waves, but Pepperdine had a 22-12 edge in points off turnovers. Both teams made eight three-pointers, but the Waves did it on 15 attempts (53.3%) and the Cougars took 28 (28.6%).
Both teams were missing a pair of starters. Because of injuries, Pepperdine once again played with only nine scholarship players while dressing 12. Senior point guard Amadi Udenyi (Achilles tendon), sophomore forward Kameron Edwards (jaw) -- both expected starters -- and freshman guard Kaijae Yee-Stephens (ankle) all remain out. BYU's Kyle Davis and L.J. Rose were both sidelined with knee injuries.
The Waves play the next three games on the road, beginning Saturday (Feb. 11) at San Diego. The 6 p.m. contest will be televised locally by Spectrum SportsNet. There will also be an audio-only WaveCasts with Al Epstein at PepperdineWaves.com.
