
Waves Drop Heartbreaker at UC Irvine, 75-74

MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on the road at UC Irvine on Thursday night, falling 75-74 after the Anteaters were awarded a trip to the line with 1.7 seconds left.
The Waves fall to 3-3 on the year with the loss, while UC Irvine moves to 3-5. Pepperdine had a last-second shot to win the game, getting the ball back with 1.4 seconds to go, but the final attempt was just off the mark.

Yasmine Robinson-Bacote fell just short of her fourth straight double-double after getting in late foul trouble, but still managed 18 points and seven rebounds.
Sydney Bordonaro was the third Wave in double-figures, scoring 13 points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.

UC Irvine won the points in the paint margin 40-26 and points off turnovers 21-6.
Pepperdine had its second worst shooting game of the season, shooting 36.2% from the field and just 23.1% in the fourth quarter.
The Waves' 27 made free throws were a season high.

The Waves led 39-33 at the half thanks to back-to-back threes by Bordonaro and Peyton Langston. Pepperdine would hold that lead until midway through the third period when Robinson-Bacote went to the bench with four fouls and UC Irvine went on a 10-2 run to take a 56-55 lead into the fourth.
After trading baskets and the lead in the final period, Pepperdine took a 70-66 lead with 2:29 to play. The Anteaters scored two baskets in the next minute to tie it up with 1:29 to go and then a third basket at the 1:02 mark to take the lead. Carter hit two free throws with 37 seconds left to tie the game back up, and then after two Dejiah Banks' free throws, Carter hit a layup to tie the game again at 74-74 with just five seconds to play. UC Irvine brought the ball down quickly off the make and Banks was sent to the line with 1.7 seconds to go. She hit 1-of-3 free throws and Pepperdine got to set up a last-second try with 1.4 seconds, but the shot was no good.

Pepperdine heads home for a matchup with Utah Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Waves then have games at Utah and Weber State the following week, before a break for finals week.
