LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Down to just 10 active players and one post player, the Pepperdine Women's Basketball team dropped a back-and-forth contest on the road at Loyola Marymount on Thursday night, falling 72-60 to the Lions in a PCH Cup matchup.
The short-handed Pepperdine squad, which was already without three post players due to injury, lost leading-scorer forward Yasmine Robinson-Bacote just prior to tip-off to an injury in warmups. The only true post player left on the active roster, Megan House, fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. The size difference proved too much to overcome, as the Waves were beat on the boards and gave up 17 second-chance points. Pepperdine was also without third-leading scorer Sydney Bordonaro, giving them five sidelined players.
The loss drops the Waves to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in West Coast Conference play. LMU improves to 6-8 overall, 1-2 WCC with the win.
Pepperdine led as late as 1:05 left in the third quarter and was up by as much as seven points in the third, but LMU hit a buzzer beater heading to the fourth to take the lead, and never gave it up. The Waves grabbed the advantage in the second half thanks to three-balls by Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS), but went cold in the fourth.
Pepperdine hit just one field goal in the final quarter and had six free throws. LMU made just two baskets in the fourth period, but one was a three, and the Lions also made 13-of-14 foul shots to pick up the win.
After trailing by six through one quarter of play, the Waves opened the second period on a 10-3 run to grab a 22-21 lead with just under five minutes to play in the half. Green led the charge, hitting a pair of threes and a layup to give Pepperdine its first lead since the opening minutes. The Waves would lead 28-27 at the half thanks to a pair of Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) free throws.
Pepperdine shot 43% in the first half and knocked down 2-of-7 threes. LMU hit three 3-pointers, but shot just 30% from the floor. The Lions did hold a 25-19 rebounding edge through the first two quarters of play. Both teams turned it over seven times in the first half.
For the game, LMU owned a 54-42 rebounding advantage and a 17-4 advantage in second chance points. The Waves finished shooting 34% to 30% on the game for LMU.
Pepperdine was led by Green's 18 points and House (Oceanside, Calif./J Serra Catholic HS), who put up her first career double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
The Waves head to San Diego on Saturday for another WCC matchup. Tip-off for that game will be 2 p.m., with all the action broadcast live on WaveCasts and TheW.tv.
