Pepperdine took a lead in the first quarter and led nearly wire-to-wire following the Torero's 2-0 lead on the first basket of the day. The Waves were up by as much as 15 points in the second quarter.
San Diego cut it to a six point game in the fourth quarter, however, but Pepperdine held on for the final 2:08. The Waves scored seven straight after the Toreros made it a 46-40 contest, giving the visitors a 13-point lead with 34 seconds to play.
"This was a great team win," said Head Coach Ryan Weisenberg. "We came in with a game plan and executed it all the way through. We wanted to limit them in the paint and we did exactly that. We also were consistent on the offensive end."
The Waves got out to a hot start, going up by as much as 10 in the first quarter and taking a 28-13 lead into the break. Pepperdine held the Toreros to just 21% shooting in the first half and grabbed seven steals. San Diego went 0-for-11 from three in the first two quarters.
Robinson-Bacote was big on both ends for the Waves, scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds. Pepperdine shot 40.7% in the first half.
"Yasmine is Ms. Double-double for us this year," said Weisenberg. "She did a great job down low for us controlling the paint. Megan House was also huge for us down there. Her rebounding and rim protection were a big key to this win. And then you have Barbara Sitanggan, who has been our Magic Johnson all year. She does a great job keeping us calm and breaking there press. The 5-2 assist to turnover ratio was also fantastic today."
House (Oceanside, Calif./J Serra Catholic HS) finished with seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the game, and Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS) added seven rebounds and two steals to her five assists. Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) also scored 12 points and Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) had 10. Pepperdine won the rebounding battle by a 41-34 margin.
Sydney Williams led San Diego with 16 points in the game and Cori Woodward had 10. San Diego was just 2-for-21 from three in the game.
The victory snaps an 11-game losing streak against the Toreros for the Waves, dating back to 2011. In the span of two weeks, the Waves have snapped an 11-game losing streak against San Diego and a 15-game losing streak to Gonzaga.
The Waves return home for a game against Pacific on Thursday and then head to Santa Clara on Saturday next week. Both games will be shown live on TheW.tv.
