MALIBU, Calif. " Frederick Wedel and Sahith Theegala of the Pepperdine men's golf team capped off outstanding seasons by being named PING All-West Region by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), a senior, and Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS), a freshman, are the first Waves to earn All-Region status since Josh Anderson in 2012.
Wedel and Theegala finished this year with scoring averages of 71.00 and 71.06, respectively, which rank tied for second and fourth all-time on the Waves' single-season records list. Theegala's average set a freshman scoring mark at Pepperdine that beat the previous record by two full strokes.
Both were named to the All-West Coast Conference first team, and Theegala also earned WCC Freshman of the Year honors.
Wedel had five top-10 results and eight top-20 finishes in 13 tournaments, while Theegala had two and seven in 12 events. Wedel's 19 below-par rounds were the third-most in school single-season history, while Theegala tied for fourth with 17 (and set another freshman record).
Wedel ended his Pepperdine career with three All-WCC honors (twice on the first team and once on honorable mention). His career scoring average of 72.69 put him at fourth place on the Waves' list.
The duo helped Pepperdine tie a school record with nine top-five finishes, including a second-place result at the WCC Championships.
