FRANKLIN, Tenn. " Frederick Wedel and Sahith Theegala both shot 2-under 70s to lead the Pepperdine men's golf team during Tuesday's second round of the NCAA Franklin Regional hosted by Vanderbilt.
Thanks to a 2-under 286, Pepperdine moved up two spots on the leaderboard to ninth place but unfortunately the Waves are facing a huge gap from where they need to be. Only the top five teams will move on to the NCAA Championships, and Pepperdine is 20 shots back of fourth-place Vanderbilt and Kennesaw State.
The Waves have a two-day total of a 6-over 582 (296-286) at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Wednesday's third and final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT (5:30 a.m. PT) for the Waves, who will be paired with Houston and East Carolina and will start on the 10th hole.
Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS), a freshman, shot his second straight 2-under 70 and is tied for 17th place with a 4-under 140. He had a total of five birdies on the day, including two in his final three holes.
The rest of the Waves all improved on their round one scores by multiple strokes.
Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), a senior, collected four birdies as he moved up to a tie for 40th place with a 1-over 145 (75-70).
Junior Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) is tied for 49th at 147 (75-72). He posted seven birdies during an eventful day that led to an even-par round
Freshman Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) is tied for 63rd at 150 (76-74) and junior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) is 74th at 156 (80-76).
Pepperdine is making its 21st NCAA Regional appearance in 25 years and is trying to qualify for the NCAA Championships (May 27-June 1 in Oregon) for the ninth time in program history.
