MORAGA, Calif. - After taking the first two games of the series, the Pepperdine baseball team dropped its finale at Saint Mary's, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon to close out the West Coast Conference series.
The loss drops the Waves to 25-21 overall and 14-10 in WCC play. Saint Mary's moves to 27-22, 15-9 WCC. The Waves currently sit in fourth place in the conference standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The top four teams in the WCC at the end of the year make the conference tournament. Only the winner of today's game between San Diego and Pacific can catch the Waves for the final spot in the tournament.
After the Waves went up early, Saint Mary's came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead. The Gaels got a solo-homer from Anthony Villa and then hit three straight singles to tie the game. A wild pitch would bring home the go-ahead run.
Pepperdine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third and then got a two-run homer from Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) to take a 3-0 lead in the fourth.
Saint Mary's came back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Villa single to make it a one-run game. Matt Crowder (Atherton, Calif.//BYU) made it 4-2 in favor of the Waves with an RBI single in the top of the sixth, before the Gaels came back in the bottom half of the inning.
Saint Mary's would add a solo home run by Zach Kirtley in the bottom of the seventh to go up 6-4.
Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) led the Waves, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Caruso's homer was his first of the year. Villa was 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Gaels. Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) took the loss for the Waves, while Cameron Neff got the win. Anthony Gonsolin picked up the save, tossing the final two innings for the home team.
Pepperdine takes on CSUN in a Tuesday road-game and then ends the regular season with a three-game home series against Pacific starting on Friday.
